Game Overview

Maniac Mansion came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Lucasfilm Games. It was a time when adventure games were mostly on computers, so seeing one on the NES felt different, a bit more experimental and text heavy than the platformers and action titles that usually filled the cartridge slot.

You control a group of teenagers, selecting three from a possible seven to explore the mansion and rescue your friend Sandy from the clutches of Dr. Fred. The game plays out screen by screen; you move a cursor to interact with objects, combine items, and talk to the strange inhabitants of the house. The puzzles are the heart of it, often requiring obscure logic, like feeding a tentacle or using a meteor piece on a hamster. It's deliberately slow and can be unforgiving, with many ways to fail or get stuck permanently. Figuring it out feels like untangling a very weird, very satisfying knot.
