Maniac Mansion is one of those weird, clunky NES adventures that somehow sticks with you. You pick three teenagers (I always took the punk rocker and the photographer—no idea why) and wander through this creepy mansion full of bizarre characters. The puzzles are ridiculous in the best way—like microwaving a hamster to progress—and half the time you’re just trying not to get killed by a sentient meteor or a deranged nurse. It’s janky, but the writing’s sharp, and there’s something oddly charming about its low-budget horror vibe. Just save often unless you enjoy replaying the first 20 minutes over and over.
