Game Overview

Maniac Mansion for the NES was published by Jaleco in 1990, a conversion of the earlier computer game by Lucasfilm Games. It arrived late on the console, a point-and-click adventure translated awkwardly but ambitiously to a gamepad. You don't point and click; you move a cursor with the D-pad, a deliberate and sometimes clumsy process that defines its pace.

You control a team of three teenagers selected from a larger cast, each with unique, often useless, skills. The goal is to rescue your girlfriend from the mansion of the eccentric Dr. Fred. Gameplay involves exploring the mansion room by room, picking up items, and combining them in logical, or illogical, ways to solve environmental puzzles. The signature mechanic is switching between your three characters on the fly, using their specific abilities to access new areas; one can play the timpani, another can fix radios. It is a slow, methodical game where a wrong move can get a character killed, forcing a reload. Progress feels earned through stubborn trial and error.
