Game Overview

Maniac Mansion is one of those weird, hilarious point-and-click adventures that somehow still holds up. You play as Dave, who—like any sensible teenager—decides to break into a creepy mansion to rescue his girlfriend from a mad scientist. Classic setup, right? But the twist is the whole place is run by this sentient meteor that’s basically turned the family into a bunch of lunatics.

The first thing you’ll notice is how much personality the game has. The characters are ridiculous (in the best way), and the puzzles range from "oh, that makes sense" to "wait, why would I ever think to microwave the hamster?" And yeah, you can microwave a hamster. Or at least try to. The game doesn’t hold your hand, so expect some trial and error—but that’s half the fun.

It’s also the game that introduced SCUMM, the engine behind a ton of LucasArts classics. The point-and-click controls were a big deal back then, and honestly, they still feel smooth compared to clunky text-parser adventures. Just don’t expect the NES version—Nintendo made them cut so much weird stuff that it’s basically a different game.

If you like your horror with a side of absurd humor and don’t mind getting stuck now and then, this is a must-play. Just maybe keep a walkthrough handy for the weirder puzzles.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
