Game Overview

I picked up Mortal Kombat II for the Game Boy back in 1994, developed by Probe Entertainment. It was one of those ambitious ports that tried to bring the arcade experience to a handheld, and for its time, it did a decent job fitting the brutal world of Outworld onto that small screen. The hardware limitations were obvious, but it was still Mortal Kombat, and that meant something.

You choose from a roster of fighters like Sub-Zero or Scorpion and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent and eventually face Shao Kahn. Signature mechanics include performing special moves, like Scorpion’s spear or Sub-Zero’s ice blast, and finishing opponents with fatalities, which were surprisingly intact for a portable release. The pacing is fast, though the controls can feel a bit stiff compared to the arcade original. It’s challenging but satisfying when you pull off a win, especially with those classic finishers. Playing it feels like carrying a pocket-sized piece of the arcade chaos wherever you go.
