New York Nyankies came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed and published by Jaleco. It was one of those oddball titles that felt right at home on the NES, a system that had no shortage of quirky, offbeat games trying to stand out from the crowd of platformers and RPGs.
You control a cat named Nyankichi, and your goal is to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend by fighting through the city's canine gangs. The main action involves picking up enemy dogs and throwing them into trash cans, which is as satisfying as it is ridiculous. You explore the city screen by screen, and you can recruit other cats to follow you, forming a small gang that helps in fights. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when you're swarmed. It feels chaotic and silly in the best way possible.
