Game Overview

Pirates! came out in 1987 from MicroProse, with Sid Meier as the designer. It was one of those MS-DOS games that felt like it belonged on the platform, a deep simulation that asked a lot of your imagination and your patience with keyboard commands. You weren't just playing a game; you were booting up a world.

You control a pirate captain from a top-down view of the Caribbean, managing your ship, your crew, and your reputation. The main goal is to amass enough wealth and fame to eventually retire comfortably. Key mechanics include real-time naval combat where you maneuver to broadside enemy vessels, and tense sword fighting duels that play out in a simple fencing mini-game. The pacing is entirely your own; you can spend years hunting merchant fleets, ransacking towns, or even courting a governor's daughter. It feels less like winning and more like living a full, unpredictable life on the high seas.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
