Game Overview

Pokémon Stadium on the N64 was the first time we got to see our little Game Boy monsters in full 3D glory—and man, did it feel like magic back then. You could plug in your Game Boy cartridge (if you had the Transfer Pak) and battle with your actual team from Red/Blue, watching your Charizard finally throw flames in proper 3D instead of pixelated sprites. The animations were surprisingly lively for the time—Pikachu’s Thunderbolt actually looked dangerous, and watching a Hyper Beam knock a Pokémon across the arena never got old.

It wasn’t just a straight port, though. The game had its own single-player cups with rental Pokémon if you didn’t have your own, and the AI could be brutal if you weren’t careful. I remember getting wrecked by the Rival Cup more times than I’d like to admit. And let’s not forget the minigames—Lickitung’s sushi gobbling and Clefairy’s rhythm game were weirdly addictive.

If you had friends over, this was the ultimate party game before Smash Bros took over. Nothing beats the chaos of four-player battles where someone’s Alakazam sweeps the whole team because nobody packed a Dark-type.
