Race Driver: GRID on the Nintendo DS came out in 2008 from Codemasters, a developer known for its racing titles. It was a solid attempt to bring a serious circuit racer to the handheld during a time when the platform was flooded with more casual or stylized driving games.
You control a rookie driver starting with a basic car, competing in a series of events across different racing disciplines to earn money and reputation. The main objective is to progress through the career, buying better vehicles and upgrading your current ones. Signature mechanics include a rewind feature that lets you undo a bad corner or a crash, and a detailed damage model that visually and mechanically affects your car's performance after impacts. The racing is fast and the AI is aggressive, making clean laps a real challenge. It feels surprisingly substantial for a DS racer, demanding focus and rewarding precision.
