Game Overview

Rampage came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, a port of the arcade game by Bally Midway. It was part of that wave of straightforward, often chaotic games that felt perfectly at home on the NES, where you could just pick up and play without a long story or complex setup. The premise was simple, and it stood out even among other titles from that year.

You control one of three giant monsters, a gorilla, a lizard, or a wolf, and your goal is to destroy every city you're dropped into, level by level. You punch buildings to rubble, eat people who pop out of windows, and swat away military vehicles like flies. The key mechanics involve climbing structures, smashing everything in sight, and managing a constantly decreasing health bar that you can only refill by eating certain items (or people). The game moves quickly, and the difficulty comes from the relentless attacks by helicopters, soldiers, and police; if your health runs out, you shrink back to human size and the stage ends. It feels rowdy and silly, like causing cartoon havoc with a friend on the same screen.
