Game Overview

Rogue came out in 1984, developed by Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman and published as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series. It was one of those early dungeon crawlers that ran on text-based terminals, using simple characters to build its world. At the time, it stood out for its use of procedural generation, something not many games attempted back then.

You control an adventurer represented by an @ symbol, descending level by level into a monster-filled dungeon. Your goal is to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor from the deepest floor and make it back to the surface alive. The game plays out screen by screen, with turn based movement and combat; you bump into enemies to attack, manage limited inventory, and use scrolls and potions with unknown effects until identified. Every death is permanent, and the entire dungeon layout, item placement, and enemy spawns change with each new attempt. It feels tense and unpredictable, demanding careful decisions with every step.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
