I picked up Space Invaders for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1997, a Taito release that brought the arcade classic home with a few extra modes. It was a time when the SNES library was deep with all kinds of adventures, but this was a straightforward return to basics, a no frills kind of port that just worked.

You control a lone laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, moving it horizontally to shoot rows of descending aliens before they reach the bottom or destroy your shields. The main goal is to clear each wave, with the aliens gradually speeding up as their numbers thin out. Key mechanics include taking cover behind the destructible barriers and the occasional appearance of a mystery ship that zips across the top for bonus points. The pacing is tense and methodical, demanding careful aim and quick reactions as the threat escalates. It feels sharp and immediate, a pure test of focus and timing.
