Game Overview

Spider-Man on Game Boy Color is one of those late '90s gems that actually makes you feel like you're web-swinging through New York—or at least as close as a tiny greenish screen can get. You start off investigating an explosion at Dr. Connors' lab, and before long, you're tangled up with Venom, Lizard, and Hobgoblin. The levels aren't just straight lines—you can backtrack or explore parts of the city, sewers, and docks in whatever order you want, which was pretty cool for a handheld game back then.

Combat's simple at first—just punching and kicking thugs—but as you level up, Spidey learns new moves that make fights way more satisfying. The real fun kicks in when you start swinging between buildings or sticking to walls to avoid enemies. And yeah, the spider-sense actually helps, buzzing when you're near something important (unlike some games where it's just a gimmick). Boss fights are the highlight, especially Venom—he's an absolute tank, and you'll probably die a few times figuring out his patterns.

It's not perfect—some of the platforming can be janky, and the graphics are obviously limited—but for a GBC game, it nails the Spider-Man vibe better than you'd expect. If you're into retro superhero games, this one's worth dusting off.
