Play Star Trek Online

You juggle ship systems while dodging Klingons—divert power to shields or risk saving a planet with failing engines. That clunky targeting system somehow makes nailing a photon torpedo shot feel like a victory.

Game Overview

Star Trek on the NES came out in 1986, published by Ultra Games. It was one of those early attempts to bring a complex sci-fi universe to a console better known for platformers and action games. You could tell they were trying to do something ambitious with the hardware, even if it didn't always click.

You control the Enterprise from a top-down view, warping between sectors of space to defend starbases from Klingon attacks. The main goal is to hunt down and destroy a set number of enemy ships before they destroy all your bases. You manage ship systems like shields, energy, and torpedoes on a separate screen, which constantly pulls you out of the action. Combat involves a clumsy targeting reticle that you line up over enemy ships before firing. The pacing is slow, and the difficulty is unforgiving; one wrong move can leave you stranded without energy. It feels like a constant battle against the interface as much as the Klingons.
