Luke awkwardly swings his lightsaber between janky jumps, then swaps to an X-wing for clunky top-down dogfights—somehow the Death Star run’s easier here than on NES, but good luck with those pixel-perfect platforming pits.

Game Overview

Okay, so this is the Game Boy version of Star Wars: A New Hope, and it’s… kind of a weird little time capsule. You jump between side-scrolling platforming (Luke with his lightsaber, awkwardly hopping over pits) and these top-down shooter bits where you’re in the X-wing. The controls take some getting used to—expect to faceplant into Sand People a few times before it clicks.

Weirdly, the Death Star trench run is way more forgiving here than in the NES version. Still, the sprite flicker is real, and some of the platforming feels like it was designed by someone who hated joy. But hey, it’s Star Wars on a monochrome screen in your pocket, and there’s something charming about that.
