Play Street Fighter II Online

Tiny buttons make dragon punches tricky, but nailing that perfect Hadouken on the bus ride home just hits different. Chun-Li’s kicks still feel unfair, and Bison will stomp you if you don’t block.

Game Overview

I picked up Street Fighter II on Game Boy around 1995, a Capcom release that squeezed the arcade experience into a pocket-sized screen. It was one of the more ambitious fighting games for the handheld at the time, trading some visual flair for portability. You could finally take Ryu and Ken with you, even if the sprites were smaller and the colors were shades of green.

You pick a fighter and face a series of opponents, one after another, with the goal of beating them all to become the world warrior. The core mechanics are all here: special moves like fireballs and spinning bird kicks, super combos that build as you take damage, and a six-button layout simplified for the Game Boy’s limited inputs. Matches are fast, and the AI doesn’t pull punches, so you learn to read patterns and time your counters. It feels satisfying to land a well-timed special move, even on that tiny monochrome display.
