Subarashiki Kono Sekai, known as The World Ends with You in English, came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007 from Square Enix. You play as Neku, a reluctant teenager stuck in a deadly game across a stylized version of Shibuya. Your goal is to survive a seven-day ordeal by completing daily missions, battling monsters called Noise, and forming uneasy partnerships. Combat uses both screens: you control Neku on the bottom with the stylus, activating psychic abilities by drawing or tapping, while your partner fights on the top screen using directional inputs. You explore the city screen by screen, scan for hidden threats, and even evolve your powers by equipping different pins. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike if you aren't managing your equipment and partner synergy. It feels frantic and inventive, demanding your full attention in a way few games do.
