Play Super Mario 14 Online
A bootleg Mario game with altered levels, sprites, and unusual enemies.
I picked up Super Mario 14 for the NES back in 1993, a game that was never officially released by Nintendo but circulated as a bootleg cartridge. It was one of those odd, unofficial titles that showed up in discount bins and flea markets, often with altered sprites and level designs that felt just slightly off from the real Mario games.
You control Mario through a series of side scrolling platform levels, jumping on enemies and breaking blocks. The main goal is still to reach the flagpole at the end of each stage, but the level layouts are jumbled, with familiar elements placed in strange new contexts. Signature mechanics include screen by screen exploration through warped versions of classic Mario environments and collecting coins that are sometimes replaced with odd, non standard items. The pacing is erratic, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly due to poorly placed enemies or platforms. Playing it feels like navigating a familiar dream where everything is almost right, but unsettlingly different.
