Super Mario Dream World V0.2 is one of those fan-made SNES gems that makes you forget it wasn’t an official release. It’s got all the tight controls and charm of Super Mario World, but with these dreamy, slightly off-kilter levels that keep throwing curveballs—like power-ups that mess with gravity or enemies that look like they escaped from a Mario-meets-Salvador-Dali collab.

The first level lulls you in with familiar greens and blues, then suddenly you’re hopping across floating jelly blocks while a jazzy remix of the underground theme plays. Some of the platforming gets surprisingly tricky (that one autoscroll section with the spinning firebars nearly broke me), but it never feels unfair—just inventive. And the little details, like how Yoshi’s sprite changes color when he eats certain enemies? Chef’s kiss.

If you’ve ever thought, "I wish Nintendo made just one more weird, experimental Mario World sequel," this is basically that. Just don’t blame me when you lose an afternoon to it.
