Super Mario RPG is this weird, wonderful mashup of Mario’s usual platforming antics and a full-blown turn-based RPG—and somehow, it just works. You start off thinking it’s another "Bowser kidnaps Peach" situation, but then a giant sword crashes into his castle (yeah, really), flinging everyone across the map. Suddenly, Mario’s teaming up with Bowser, a talking doll named Geno, and even Princess Peach herself to take down a new threat.

The combat feels familiar if you’ve played old-school RPGs, but with a twist: timed button presses make your attacks hit harder or reduce damage taken. It sounds simple, but nailing the timing for each character’s moves—like Mario’s jump or Geno’s laser beam—feels oddly satisfying. You’ll swap party members in and out (Mario’s stuck with you, though), hunt down better gear, and stumble into some genuinely funny moments—like Toad getting way too into gambling.

It’s got that classic SNES charm, from the bright, isometric world to the goofy NPCs. Even the grinding doesn’t feel like a chore because the battles stay snappy. If you’ve ever wanted to see Mario in a full-on RPG adventure, this is still one of the best ways to do it.
