Super Mario World came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of those foundational games that really showed what the new console could do, with its bright colors and huge levels that felt so much bigger than what we had on the NES.

The big new mechanics are the cape, which lets you fly after a running start, and Yoshi, the dinosaur you can ride who eats enemies. The pacing is quick but forgiving; you can take your time exploring levels for secret exits that open up new routes. It feels smooth and responsive, like every jump and spin is exactly under your control.
