Super Mario World - Legend of the Yoshistal 2 is one of those romhacks that actually gets it right. At first glance, it looks like classic SNES Mario—same sprites, same music, same satisfying *boing* when you bounce off a Koopa. But then you notice the little things: weird new power-ups tucked into question blocks, levels that twist in ways the original never did, and Yoshis in colors you didn’t even know existed.

I got stuck on this one level where you have to ride a red Yoshi through a maze of falling platforms, and it took me way too many tries to figure out the timing. The difficulty sneaks up on you—it starts cozy, then suddenly you’re sweating over pixel-perfect jumps. But it never feels unfair, just... creatively mean, in that classic Mario way.

If you’ve played the original to death, this feels like digging up a lost sequel Nintendo forgot to release. The sprite work is so clean you’d swear it was official, and the new music tracks slap. Just don’t blame me when you lose an afternoon to it.
