Super Mario World - MarioX World 4th is one of those romhacks that actually gets it right. You boot it up expecting the same old Dinosaur Land, but within minutes, you're running into level layouts that feel just slightly off—in a good way. Like, why is there a Piranha Plant there? Since when do Koopas team up like that? It keeps that perfect Mario World feel—the jumps, the spin, Yoshi’s weird little tongue flick—but throws in enough surprises to make your muscle memory panic.

The new levels are the real star. Some are brutal, some are just clever, but they all have that "one more try" pull. Found a hidden vine that led to a whole alternate path, and suddenly I was grinning like I was 10 again. If you’ve played the original to death, this feels like stumbling on a lost cartridge with levels you somehow missed.

Also, whoever designed the new power-up placements clearly enjoys watching players suffer (in the best way). You’ll love it.
