Super Mario World - Pit of Despair is one of those romhacks that makes you question whether you ever actually were good at Mario. It starts off familiar—same green pipes, same happy little clouds—but then you hit the first level and realize something’s… off. Enemies spawn in brutal patterns, platforms crumble faster than your confidence, and those hidden blocks? Half of them are just there to laugh at you.

What’s wild is how well it keeps the original’s charm while absolutely wrecking you. The music’s still catchy, the controls are tight, and Yoshi’s as lovable as ever—until he gets knocked into a pit by some nightmare version of a Koopa you’ve never seen before. It’s the kind of challenge that makes you groan, reset, and then immediately try again because surely you can do better next time.

Fair warning: if you thought the original game’s special world was tough, this one doesn’t even pretend to play nice. But if you’ve ever wanted to feel like a Mario newbie again, this’ll do it.
