Super Mario World came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of those foundational games that really showed what the new console could do, with its bright colors and huge levels that felt expansive compared to what came before.

You control Mario, or Luigi if you have a friend, running and jumping through a world map full of branching paths. The main goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, but the real draw is exploring every nook of each level, finding secret exits, and unlocking new routes. The cape feather lets you fly, Yoshi eats enemies and can sometimes spit them back out, and the sheer number of hidden blocks and alternate paths encourages constant experimentation. The pacing is generally smooth, though some of the special stages ramp up the difficulty considerably. It feels like a playground built for discovery, where even after dozens of plays you can still find something new.
