Super Mario World came out in 1990 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the games that really showed what the SNES could do, with bigger levels and more color than what we were used to on the NES. It felt like a proper step forward, not just another sequel.

You control Mario, or Luigi if a friend is playing, running and jumping through a large overworld map to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The main goal is to clear each level, defeat the koopalings in their castles, and find all the secret exits to unlock new paths. Signature mechanics include riding Yoshi, who can eat enemies and gain powers from certain shells, and the new spin jump that lets you break blocks from below. The cape feather gives you the ability to fly if you build up enough speed, adding a whole new layer to exploration. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty ramps up steadily, especially in the special stages. It feels responsive and inventive, like the designers were constantly finding new ways to play with the rules they set up.
