Game Overview

I first played The Civil War: Master Players Edition back in 1996, when it came out as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series from Empire Interactive. It was a solid turn-based strategy game for its time, fitting right in with other thoughtful, slower-paced titles on the platform. You don't see many games like this anymore, where the focus is purely on planning and execution without flashy graphics.

You take command of either the Union or Confederate armies, directing infantry, cavalry, and artillery across detailed maps of famous battles. The main goal is to outmaneuver and defeat the opposing force through careful positioning and timing. Key mechanics include flanking enemy units with cavalry for extra damage, managing artillery reload times between volleys, and seizing strategic points on the map. The pacing is deliberate, almost chess-like, and the difficulty is steep, especially in the Master Players Edition where the AI punishes mistakes harshly. It feels deeply satisfying when a well-planned assault finally breaks through the enemy lines.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
