Game Overview

I picked up The Dezerian Assignment: Code Red Key as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, though details on its original developer or publisher are pretty scarce. It's one of those early 90s titles that really leaned into the moody, text-heavy adventure style that was common before full motion video took over. You're thrown into a low-res world of espionage and corporate intrigue, and the aesthetic is pure period; lots of static screens, command prompts, and a color palette that screams VGA.

You play as an operative trying to uncover a conspiracy, navigating through locations screen by screen, interacting with objects and characters through a verb-based interface. The main objective involves gathering intelligence, solving environmental puzzles, and making dialogue choices that directly impact how the story unfolds. Key mechanics include inventory puzzles where you combine items in logical (or sometimes frustratingly illogical) ways, and branching narrative paths that lock you out of certain outcomes based on earlier decisions. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty comes from the lack of handholding; you need to pay close attention to documents and conversations, often taking notes by hand. It feels like walking a tightrope where one misstep can send you back to the start of the mission.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
