Game Overview

I first played The World Ends with You on the Nintendo DS back in 2007, developed by Square Enix and Jupiter. It arrived during a period when the DS was full of creative, touch-focused games, and this one stood out for its style and its willingness to do things differently.

You control Neku, a reluctant teenager forced to compete in the Reapers' Game, a seven-day struggle for survival in a twisted version of Shibuya. Your main goal is to complete daily missions without being erased by the Noise, creatures that infest the streets. Combat happens across both screens: you fight on the bottom screen using psychic pins activated by specific touch or microphone commands, like slashing, tapping, or shouting, while your partner acts independently on the top screen, controlled with the D-pad. You need to manage both characters simultaneously, often chaining attacks together to perform Fusion moves. The game encourages exploration screen by screen, scanning for hidden Noise, and engaging in battles that demand your full attention. It starts challenging and stays that way, asking you to multitask in a way few games do. Playing it feels like conducting chaos, a constant push to keep up with its demands and style.
