Game Overview

Transformers: Autobots for the Nintendo DS came out in 2007, published by Activision. It was one of the tie-in games for the live-action movie, and on the DS it offered a portable take on the giant robot action that felt right at home on the dual screens. The hardware wasn't pushing polygons like the consoles, but it got the job done for a quick mission on the go.

You control one of the Autobots, like Bumblebee or Optimus Prime, in a series of missions across an open city. The main goal is usually to protect humans, fight off Decepticons, or race to a location before time runs out. The signature mechanic is, of course, transforming; a quick swipe on the touchscreen shifts you from robot to vehicle mode instantly, which you use to ram enemies, escape tight spots, or just tear down the highway. Combat is straightforward, mixing melee combos with ranged attacks, and the mission structure is simple, sometimes repetitive, but the pace stays brisk. It feels exactly like you'd hope: a little janky in places, but genuinely fun to smash through a fence as a sports car and then punch a drone in the face.
