War of the Lance came out in 1990 from Strategic Simulations, Inc., one of those MS-DOS games that really leaned into the tactical side of fantasy. It was a time when you expected to spend a lot of time with graph paper and manuals, and this game fit right in with that thoughtful, methodical approach to computer role-playing.

You command a party of heroes from the Dragonlance novels, guiding them across a world map of Krynn where you choose which regions to aid or confront. The main goal is to gather allies and weaken the Dragonarmies before the final confrontation. Combat is turn-based and grid-driven, with careful positioning of fighters, mages, and clerics making all the difference. You explore towns and wilderness areas screen by screen, talking to locals and picking up quests that influence your reputation and available resources. The game moves deliberately, and some battles can be punishing if you rush in unprepared. It feels like managing a fragile band of survivors through a war that’s bigger than any one hero.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
