Wonder Planet came out in 1992 as an arcade cabinet release from Arcade Studios. It was part of that wave of early 90s shooters that filled arcades before home consoles really took over, and it had a clean, colorful look that stood out even on a crowded floor.
You pilot a small, agile ship through vertically scrolling stages packed with enemy craft and ground installations. Your main goal is simply to survive; you shoot airborne foes with your main cannon and drop bombs to destroy targets below. Between levels, you can upgrade your ship's weapons and speed using power-ups collected by grabbing floating letters that appear after destroying certain enemies. The pacing is relentless, with screen-filling boss encounters waiting at the end of each stage. It feels tense and demanding, but deeply satisfying when you thread through a thick hail of bullets and come out on top.
