Game Overview

I first played The World Ends with You on the Nintendo DS back in 2007, a Square Enix game that really felt like it belonged to that era. It wasn't trying to be another big fantasy RPG; it was something completely different, set in a stylized version of Shibuya that used both screens in a way few other games did.

You control Neku, a reluctant participant in the Reapers' Game, fighting for a chance to come back to life. Battles happen in real time across both screens: you use the stylus on the bottom screen to perform attacks with psychic pins, while simultaneously directing a partner on the top screen with the D-pad or face buttons. You explore the city district by district, taking on missions, scanning people's thoughts to uncover clues, and building your pin collection to unlock new combat abilities. The game demands your full attention, especially in later battles where managing both characters at once becomes essential. It feels frantic and stylish, like you're conducting chaos with every swipe and tap.
