Game Overview

All-Star Baseball 2001 on Game Boy Color is basically last year’s game with a fresh coat of paint—but hey, if you’re into late-90s baseball sims, that’s not a bad thing. The rosters are updated for the 2000 season, and the menus look a little slicker, but you’ll still recognize the same behind-the-batter pitching view and isometric fielding from the last installment.

What’s new? A Hall of Fame team to wreck your friends with (Babe Ruth vs. modern pitchers never gets old) and slightly smoother animations. The AI feels less brain-dead when fielding, though don’t expect miracles—this is still a Game Boy game. You’ve got all the usual modes: season, home run derby, even batting practice if you just want to zone out and smack fastballs.

It’s not revolutionary, but if you’ve got nostalgia for pixelated baseball or just need a portable fix, it holds up. Just don’t expect to see Derek Jeter’s face in glorious detail.
