Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow came out on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by AQ Interactive. It was part of that late DS era where developers were still pushing the hardware with ambitious RPGs, even as the 3DS loomed on the horizon. This one was a direct sequel to the original Blue Dragon, continuing its world and style.
You control a custom-created hero who fights alongside a party of characters from the first game. The main goal is to stop a spreading corruption known as the "antimatter virus." You explore towns and dungeons screen by screen, engaging in real-time action on the field that shifts into turn-based battles. A signature mechanic is building and controlling your Shadow, a monster companion whose abilities you develop through skill trees. The pacing is methodical, with a fair amount of backtracking and grinding required to tackle some of the tougher boss fights. It feels like a solid, meaty RPG that makes good use of both screens for menus and combat, giving you a lot to manage during longer play sessions.
