Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow came out for the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Mistwalker and published by Nintendo. It was part of that late DS era where developers were still finding interesting ways to use both screens, and it built on the world of the original Xbox 360 game without requiring you to have played it first.

You control a custom hero who fights alongside a team of characters from the first game, exploring dungeons and overworld areas screen by screen. The main goal is to stop an invasion of mysterious alien creatures, which involves a lot of dungeon delving, real-time combat using swords and magic, and collecting shadow fragments to power up your abilities. The pacing is methodical, with exploration and combat taking about equal focus, and the difficulty can spike in certain boss fights. It feels like a solid, meaty adventure that makes good use of the hardware.
