Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow came out on the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Mistwalker. It was part of that late DS era where developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with fully 3D RPGs, even if the graphics were a bit rough by today's standards. It's a direct sequel to the first Blue Dragon game, but it stands on its own well enough.
You control a custom-created character who fights alongside a team using creatures called Shadows. The main goal is to stop an invasive force known as the Nightmare, which involves traveling across different islands and delving into dungeons. Combat happens in real time; you dodge enemy attacks while directing your Shadow to strike, and you can fuse with it for more powerful moves. The pacing is fairly steady, with exploration broken up by frequent, sometimes challenging battles. It feels like a solid action RPG that makes good use of the DS's capabilities without overcomplicating things.
