Game Overview

Desert Commander came out on the NES in 1988 from Kemco, a company that put out a few interesting strategy titles for the console. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring more complex, turn-based war simulations to a system better known for platformers and action adventures.

You control an entire army, moving different unit types like infantry, tanks, and artillery across a grid-based map of deserts and mountains. The main goal is to capture the enemy's headquarters by outmaneuvering their forces and managing your own supply lines, which dictate how far your units can move and attack. Two key mechanics are the terrain, which gives defensive bonuses to units on mountains or in cities, and the fog of war, which hides enemy movements until your units are close enough to spot them. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, demanding careful planning each turn, and the difficulty can be punishing if you overextend a unit and cut off its supplies. It feels genuinely satisfying to execute a pincer movement that actually works.
