Play Commander Keen Online

Strap on a football helmet and blast aliens across weird planets, dodging sneaky traps and grabbing space candy between jumps. It’s got that janky old-school charm where nothing makes sense and that’s the point.

Game Overview

Commander Keen on the Game Boy Color came out in 2001, developed by David A. Palmer Productions. It was a late release for the system, arriving just as the Game Boy Advance was taking over, but it offered a portable version of the side scrolling platforming the series was known for. You control Billy Blaze, an eight year old kid who becomes the hero Commander Keen, exploring alien worlds from a top down map before diving into the action.

You guide Keen through screen by screen platforming stages, running and jumping across gaps while avoiding enemies like alien dogs and bouncing vegetables. Your main tool is a handheld raygun that shoots stun rays, letting you temporarily freeze foes to get past them. The goal in each stage is to collect all the keycards to unlock the exit, while also grabbing extra lives and points from items like soda cans and space candy. The pacing is brisk, with some tricky jumps and enemy placements that require quick timing. It feels like a condensed, slightly clunky but earnest take on exploring strange planets from a kid's perspective.
