Game Overview

Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden was my first taste of a proper DBZ fighting game back in the day. It’s rough around the edges now, but back then? Mind-blowing. You pick from eight characters at the start (Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, etc.), and there’s this weirdly satisfying weight to their movements—like every punch actually feels like it could level a mountain.

The Story Mode skips through the major arcs, from Piccolo Jr. to Cell, in just 10 fights. It’s barebones, but seeing those pixelated Kamehamehas clash for the first time? Pure nostalgia. The real fun is in Combat Mode, though—especially when you unlock the secret characters (hint: grind through Story first).

Stages are huge for an SNES fighter, so you’ll rely on the radar to track your opponent. And those beam struggles? Still hype. Vegeta’s Final Flash and Goku’s Kamehameha look janky by today’s standards, but landing one feels like winning the lottery. Just don’t expect deep combos—this is all about raw energy and dodging at the right moment.

It never made it to the US, but if you grew up with DBZ in the ‘90s, this was the closest thing to controlling the anime.
