Game Overview

Fantasy General came out in 1996 for MS-DOS, developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was part of that wave of deep, turn-based strategy games that really demanded your attention and patience, sitting you down in front of a CRT monitor for hours at a time. You don't see many games like it anymore, where the focus is purely on moving units across a strategic map and thinking several moves ahead.

You control entire armies of fantasy units, from human knights and elven archers to griffons and powerful dragons, across large hex-based maps. The main goal is to conquer the enemy's strongholds and ultimately defeat the Shadowlord, a persistent antagonist. Key mechanics include managing your army's morale and experience levels, which directly impact their performance in combat, and carefully positioning your forces to gain tactical advantages like flanking or defensive terrain bonuses. The pacing is deliberate, almost chess-like, and the difficulty is substantial, punishing careless moves and rewarding well-planned offensives. It feels like a genuine test of your strategic mind, where a single misstep in a long campaign can force you to reload an earlier save and try a completely new approach.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
