Play Final Fantasy (Japan) (Rev 0A) Online

You pick four weirdos—maybe two fighters and a white mage who’s always out of spells—then grind through dungeons where every skeleton feels like a math problem. The music still slaps though.

Game Overview

Final Fantasy on the NES is where it all started—back when Square was just Square, not Square-Enix yet. You pick four characters from a lineup of classes (fighter, thief, white mage, etc.), and honestly, your first party will probably be a mess because who knew black mages ran out of spells so fast? The pixel art still holds up, especially the little chocobos and the surprisingly detailed spell effects for an 8-bit game. That opening theme? Iconic. Just be ready for some serious grinding if you want to survive past the Marsh Cave.

It’s clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something charming about how ambitious it was for 1987. You can tell they were making it up as they went—in a good way.
