Game Overview

Klax is an unlicensed puzzle game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Tengen and released in 1990. It arrived late in the NES lifecycle, a time when puzzle games were gaining traction alongside more action oriented titles. The game doesn't try to be flashy; it presents a straightforward concept that relies entirely on its mechanics to engage the player.

You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, catching colored tiles as they slide down a conveyor belt. The main objective is to create rows, columns, or diagonals of three or more matching tiles, which you then drop into a bin for points. The core mechanics involve catching tiles, flipping their orientation, and strategically placing them in the bin to set up future matches. The pace starts deceptively calm but quickly escalates, demanding faster decisions and precise paddle movements as the levels progress. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against the game's own accelerating rhythm.
