Game Overview

Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed by New World Computing. It was one of the earlier attempts to bring a complex computer-style role-playing game to the console, arriving at a time when most NES adventures were simpler action titles. You could tell it was ambitious just by looking at the box, with its detailed party of adventurers staring out from the cover.

You control a custom party of up to six characters, choosing from classes like knights, sorcerers, and clerics. The goal is to explore the world of Varn, uncover a conspiracy, and find your way to the mysterious Inner Sanctum. You move screen by screen across an overworld and through elaborate, multi-level dungeons that are completely dark until you cast a light spell. Combat is turn-based; you input commands for each party member, then watch the results play out. The game is notoriously difficult, demanding careful resource management and a lot of manual map drawing on graph paper. It feels like a slow, methodical puzzle where every step forward is earned through preparation and patience.
