Game Overview

Pokemon MarioMon came out for the Game Boy Advance, a fan project that never saw an official release. It exists in that strange space of early 2000s homebrew, where passionate creators mashed up familiar worlds with surprising results. You boot it up and the pixel art is a charming, slightly janky blend of two very distinct styles, a clear product of its era and platform.

You control a young trainer, starting in a Toad-stool town to pick your first partner, like a baby Yoshi or a shy Shy Guy. Your main goal is to beat the eight Koopa Gym Leaders and challenge Bowser's Elite Four. The core loop is classic Pokemon; you wander through tall grass triggering turn-based battles where your creatures use moves like Fire Flower or Shell Toss. Instead of catching monsters in Pokeballs, you trap them with question blocks, and evolution often involves specific power-ups, like a Super Mushroom or a Starman. The pacing is slow, the difficulty uneven, but there's a genuine thrill in seeing a Goomba finally evolve into a Hammer Bro after a tough fight. It feels like discovering a secret, slightly broken cartridge that shouldn't exist but somehow does.
