Game Overview

Race America came out on the NES in 1992 from Absolute Entertainment, a company that put out a lot of games in that era. It was a time when split-screen multiplayer was a rare and welcome sight on the console, offering a way to compete directly with a friend without needing a second television.

You control a race car from a top-down perspective, navigating tracks that scroll by screen by screen. The main goal is to outpace your opponent across various American locales, managing your fuel and manually shifting gears with the A and B buttons; you can't change gears while accelerating, which adds a deliberate rhythm to the driving. The game has a janky, unpredictable feel, with tight turns and occasional slowdown, but the head-to-head competition is genuinely engaging. It feels satisfying to finally nail a clean lap and pull ahead after a close race.
