Rainbow Invaders was released for the Atari 2600 in 1980 by Apollo. It was one of many space shooters on the platform, but it stood out with its colorful, flickering enemies and unpredictable power-ups. The game didn't have a big name developer behind it, but it found its way into plenty of collections during that era.

You control a small ship at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right to avoid incoming invaders while shooting them down. The main goal is to clear each wave without letting any invaders reach the bottom. Two key mechanics define the experience: collecting power-ups that drop from destroyed enemies, which can either help or hinder you, and dealing with the invaders' changing formation and speed as you progress. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty spikes quickly, especially when a power-up reverses your controls or disables your firing.
