Game Overview

Rodeo Champ came out for the Atari 2600 in 1980, published by Atari themselves. It was one of those early attempts to capture a real-world sport in blocky, simple graphics, fitting right in with the experimental spirit of the platform at the time. You don't see many rodeo games, even now, so it always stood out a little on the shelf.

You control a cowboy trying to stay on a bucking bull for as long as possible. The main objective is simple: survive. You use the joystick to lean left or right, countering the bull's movements to keep your balance. Timing is everything; if you lean too far or not enough, you get thrown off immediately. The bull's pattern changes, so you have to pay close attention and react quickly. It feels tense and physical, like you're wrestling with the controller itself.
