Play Shanghai on Msdos Online
You’ll spend way too long scanning those mahjong tiles for matches, cursing when you trap yourself, then starting all over again. The clunky keyboard clicks and simple layout make it weirdly addictive.
Shanghai on MS-DOS came out in 1986 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Activision. It was a straightforward tile matching game for its time, fitting right in with the kind of thoughtful, repetitive puzzles that were common on early home computers. There was no flashy story or complex graphics; it was just you and a screen full of tiles, a quiet challenge in an era of simpler digital distractions.
You control a cursor, moving it across a layered pyramid of mahjong tiles to find and remove matching pairs. The main goal is to clear the entire board without getting stuck, which means you have to plan several moves ahead and pay close attention to which tiles are free on at least one side. The game moves at your own pace, but the difficulty comes from the way tiles stack and block each other; one wrong match can leave you with no moves left. It feels patient and focused, a test of observation and foresight that becomes quietly absorbing the longer you play.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
