Game Overview

Playing as Shrek on the Game Boy Color feels exactly like you'd hope—messy, loud, and weirdly charming. You start off smashing barrels and tossing guards around like ragdolls, which never gets old. The controls are simple (jump, punch, maybe burp if you're feeling fancy), but there's something satisfying about how everything flies across the screen when you hit it.

They nailed the movie's humor, too. Donkey shows up to annoy you at just the right moments, and the dialogue bubbles have that same snarky tone from the film. The levels are short and sweet—Duloc looks hilariously tiny on the GBC screen, and yeah, you can absolutely chuck someone into an outhouse. It's not gonna win awards for depth, but if you want to feel like a grumpy ogre for 20 minutes, this does the job perfectly.

Honestly, half the fun is how janky it all feels now. The colors are weirdly bright, the music is tinny, and Shrek's sprite looks like he's permanently mid-grumble. But that's part of the charm. It's like digging up a weird little time capsule from 2001.
